Samples experience the following life cycle within the LIMS → Samples tramline operations:

Sample Status Transition Description
Initial (create Sample) Sample has been logged in (see Note 1).
Initial → Received Sample has been Received (see Note 2).
Initial → Cancelled Sample has been determined to be unusuable.
Initial → InProgress or

Received → InProgress

Data Entry is being conducted on the Sample (see Note 3).
InProgress → Completed Sample data have been Released and (if required) Approved (see Notes 4 to 9).
Completed → Reviewed Sample data have been Reviewed.
NOTES:
1.When a Sample is created, Sample status is automatically set to "Initial" if it has not already been specified.
2.During Sample login, if the "Auto Receive Sample" option is selected, the "Receive" operation need not be performed. In this case, Sample status changes to "Received" immediately after login.
3.Data Entry can be conducted on a Sample with "Initial" or "Received" status.
4.Release is conducted at the Data Item level.
5.Approval is conducted at the Data Set level.
6.When using Worksheets, the Worksheet must be Approved before associated Samples can transition to Completed.
7.If any follow-up notes have been added, those must be resolved before the Sample can transition to Completed.
8.If any required Attributes have been added, those must have a value before the Sample can transition to Completed.
9.AQC Batches and Workflows can affect a Sample's status.
