ELN Worksheet Status |
ELN/LES Worksheets (created from a Worksheet Template in the Worksheet Manager) start in an InProgress state and proceed through the state transitions shown below.
"Operation" refers to the Status Transition button on the Worksheet Manager toolbar as shown below. "Worksheet Completion Option" is defined in the Worksheet Options → Worksheet dialog.
Worksheet State | Operation | State Transitions to: | If Worksheet Completion Option is: |

NOTES:
1. | You cannot "Mark as Complete", "Submit for Approval", or "Reject" if the Worksheet contains one or more unResolved Followup Notes. If you attempt to "Reject" without an unResolved Followup, you must repeat the "Reject" after creating the unResolved Followup. See Worksheet Manager → Detail Panel → Notes → Followup Notes. |
2. | "Complete" and "Cancelled" Worksheets are blocked from further use by making the Worksheet read-only. However, the Worksheet can still be saved as a Template (using the "Save as Template" operation). |
3. | When "PendingApproval", the Worksheet cannot
be modified except for Notes functionality.
"Approve" and "Reject" buttons are shown only if the current User is a member of the Role defined by an Approval Step in the Approval Type. If you are not familiar with LabVantage Approval processes, see Concepts of SDI Versioning and Approval and Approval Types. If there are multiple Approval Steps in the Approval Type, "PendingApproval" to "PendingApproval" is also a valid state transition. |
ELN Section and Control Status |
Sections and Controls in an ELN Worksheet start in an InProgress state and proceed through the state transitions described below.
"Operation" refers to the Status Transition button on the Section or Control toolbar as shown below. "Section Completion Option" are "Control Completion Option" are defined in these areas of the Worksheet Manager, depending on the scope of the intended option:
|
Worksheet Manager → Detail Panel → Actions → Worksheet Options → Section Defaults and Worksheet Manager → Detail Panel → Actions → Worksheet Options → Control Defaults (to apply the option by default to all Sections and Controls in the Worksheet). | |
|
Worksheet Manager → Detail Panel → Actions → Section Options and Worksheet Manager → Detail Panel → Actions → Control Options for individual Sections and Controls (to apply the option to specific Sections and Controls in the Worksheet). |
Section or Control State | Operation | State Transitions to: | If Section Completion Option or Control Completion Option is: |
InProgress | ![]() |
Complete | Requires "Mark Complete". |
Pending Approval (Section only) |
![]() |
Complete | Requires "Approval". |

InProgress | N/A |
NOTES:
1. | You cannot add a Control to a Section unless the Section is InProgress. |
LES Worksheet Status |
|
|
LES Worksheets (created from a Test Method using the LES Generator) start in a Pending state and transition to "InProgress" when the User first opens it. Otherwise, the Life Cycle is the same as ELN Worksheets.
Worksheet and Control Template Status |
|
|
The state of Worksheet Templates and Control Templates is always InProgress. They do not have a life cycle within ELN/LES. However, new Versions of Global Control Templates (but not Private Control Templates) can be created and approved in the Template through the Template List pages (see ELN General Maintenance Pages).
ELN supports only SDI Versioning and Approval (with or without Approval Types). SDI Approval with Effective Date is not supported. If you are not familiar with LabVantage Versioning processes, see Concepts of SDI Versioning and Approval.
Workbook Status |
|
|
Workbooks do not automatically transition to states. You must manually set the "Status" of a Workbook. See ELN General Maintenance Pages → Workbook Maintenance.
