The "Package Shipment Management" portion of ASL provides centralized maintenance of Packages. For information about the different options for shipping or moving Packages (such as internally between departments or Users, or to an external location) see Move Samples (Custodial Management).

Package Types

ASL can create three types of Packages:
Package Type Description
PKG
A "PKG" Package is either "received from" or "shipped to" a Shipping Location.
The automatically-generated key begins with the prefix "PKG", e.g.,

PKG-0801-000003

Work with "PKG" Packages from these tramline operations:
LIMS → PackagesAdd Package for Shipment
 Add Expected Package
 Packages
CDT (Transfer)
The automatically-generated key begins with the prefix "CDT", e.g.,

CDT-0801-000003

Create "CDT" Packages using the Transfer operation from these tramstops:
LIMS → Sample Management→ Data Entry Samples
 → Lab Operations Samples
 → Admin Samples
 → Sample Movement
LIMS → Storage→ Box List

See Move Samples → Transfer for more information.

Proxy
"Proxy" Packages are used to update information that is missing from PKG Packages that have been shipped or emptied.
Work with "Proxy" Packages from these tramline operations:
LIMS → PackagesProxy Packages

Packages

Packages experience the following life cycle:

Operation Description Package Status Transition
Create Package There are two ways to create a "PKG" Package:
Add Package for Shipment
Creates a "Package for Shipment". This is a Package that will be shipped to a Shipping Location.
Created (initial state)
Add Expected Package
Creates an "Expected Package". This is a Package that you expect to receive from a Shipping Location.
Expected (initial state)
Pack Package Use the TSIM Pages to file Trackable Items (Samples or Boxes) into the Package. None
(remains Created or Expected)
Ship Package Ship the Package to a Shipping Location.

Note that this does not apply to an "Expected Package", which is not shipped.

Created → Shipped
Receive Package You can Receive "Packages for Shipment" as well as "Expected Packages":
Receive a "Package for Shipment" from a Shipping Location.
Created → Received
Receive an "Expected Package" from a Shipping Location.
Expected → Received
Place Package
"On Hold"
If (for any reason) a "Received" Package should not yet be unpacked, you can place it "On Hold". Received → OnHold
Unpack Package Unpack a "Received" Package. This is done using the TSIM Pages to move Trackable Items (Samples or Boxes) from the Package to the Destination Shipping Location. Received → Emptied
Empty Package Marks a "Received" or "Unpacked" Package as being empty. It really must be empty. Received → Emptied

or

Unpacked → Emptied

Transfer Packages

Transfer Packages experience the following life cycle:

Operation Description Sample/Package Status Transition
Create Transfer Perform a Transfer, which:
Creates a Package with the "CDT" prefix.
Adds Samples to the Package.
Optionally define a Transit Location for the Package.
Received (selected Sample) → Shipped (Package)

In Circulation (selected Sample) → Shipped (Package)

Temporary In Lab (selected Sample) → Shipped (Package)

Take Custody of a Transfer Package A User in the Destination Custodial Department receives (using the Take Custody operation) the transferred Samples into their Department. Shipped → Emptied
